Amosun Assures Ogun Workers of Better Welfare

Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State has restated the determination of his government to meet its commitment and obligation to its workers towards their improved welfare.

He said this at the state's 2017 Public Service Day Lecture, with the topic, Stress Management and Keeping Healthy, held at the June 12, Cultural Centre, Kuto, Abeokuta.

Amosun said he is not oblivious of the fact that a productive civil service is deserving of a whole range of emolument, such as salaries, running costs, leave bonus and promotion, promising to do more as soon as the finances of the state improves.

The governor said apart from the N4.5 billion approved for the payment of six months salary deductions, government would also offset all the leave bonuses of the workers by September.

The state Head of Service, Mr. Abayomi Sobande in his address, enjoined public servants to ensure that they improve on the standard inherited from the founding fathers of the Public Service, adding that this is the only way to honour revered icons like Chief Simeon Adebo and Chief AAK Degun.

Speaking on the theme, Managing Stress and Keeping Healthy, Mr Sobande stated that Public Servants often encounter stress in the course of carrying out their duties and responsibilities, which often serves as a barrier to efficiency and productivity.

The head of Service explained that the Public Service Day has not only been celebrated with series of life touching and captivating programmes, but also been a day set aside to assess the level of stedwardship, diligence, efficiency, integrity and professionalism among other virtues expected of Public Servants, who he described as real agents of change in the society.

Delivering the lecture, Acting Provost, Neuro Psychiateic Hospital, Aro Abeokuta, Dr. Timothy Adebowale said everybody needs a little bit of stress in life for optimum performance because it serves as a form of stimulus, but that it must be moderate and not too much.

Adebowale noted that if stress is well handled, the people will live a healthier life, urging the entire workers to understand what stress is, its source, types and manifestations, to know how to manage.

Amosun pays N4.5bn deductions to workers

Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, has approved the total sum of N4.5 billion for the payment of cooperative deductions arrears to all categories of workers in the state.

This was disclosed on Tuesday in Abeokuta by the Honourable Commissioner for Finance, Mr. Wale Oshinowo.

Giving a breakdown of the payments, Oshinowo said N3.4 billion has been disbursed for the payment of six months arrears of outstanding cooperative deductions to all categories of the workforce at the state level.

Another N1.1 billion was disbursed for the payment of three months of outstanding cooperative deductions to workers at the Local Government level.

He said another sum of N1.2 billion would be expended on state expenditure.

Explaining the source of the fund, the Finance Commissioner said, it came from the N5.7 billion Ogun State government received from the Paris Club refund, which the Federal Government recently shared to different states of the Federation.

He explained that whereas the Federal Government advised state governments to use only 50 per cent of the fund for payment of workers’ emolument, Governor Amosun has decided to apportion 79 percent on the workforce because of the love he has for the workers.

“Ogun State is apportioning 79 percent to staff welfare and only 21 percent on state expenditure, aside the fact that the state government, in its usual practice, has paid June 2017 salary to all categories of workers at both the state and local government levels”, Oshinowo added.

He therefore thanked the entire civil servants in the state for their cooperation and understanding while affirming that “the state government is ready to offset all outstanding staff related expenses, as soon as more funds are available."

The Commissioner added that government would continue to do all within its power to cater for the civil and public servants in Ogun State.

Mr. Wale Oshinowo
Honourable Commissioner,
Ministry of Finance,
Abeokuta, Ogun State

Ogun bridge not stalling Lagos-Ibadan rail project – Govt
The Ogun State Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Arc. Olamilekan Adegbite, has debunked newspaper reports that the construction work on the Lagos-Ibadan standard gauge rail has been suspended over right of way issues and a flyover bridge at Ijoko, Ogun State.
Adegbite said in a statement on Tuesday that the Ijoko flyover bridge has not only met the standard regulation of 5.4 metres, it has also saved the Federal Government of the additional cost of constructing a new bridge across the railway crossing at Ijoko.
“According to Engineering Standards and Regulations in Nigeria, bridges must have a standard clearance of 5.4 metres. So the bridges at Apapa Oshodi Expressway, Bank Anthony Way, Lagos, and the new bridge being constructed by the Ogun State Government at Ijoko have all met the standard clearance as these bridges allow the train to pass as it is. Even the new standard gauge would pass under the bridge successfully”, Adegbite explained.
“While the Federal Government is thinking of closing some roads in Lagos because of the rail project, Ogun State case is different because we have provided the solution for the Federal Government by constructing the Ijoko bridge which has a standard clearance. With the construction of this bridge, courtesy of the Ogun State government, the funds which the Federal Government would have expended in providing this infrastructure have been saved”, the commissioner added.
He said because of the strategic importance of Ijoko road, being the major axis from Otta into the Agbado and Akute areas of Ogun State, government cannot afford to shut down the road which the Federal Government delegation, led by the Honourable Minister for Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, also agreed.
Adegbite pointed out that the Ogun State government constructed the Ijoko bridge to stop the frequent incessant deaths of pedestrians and traders by moving trains on the railway crossing.
He said government had taken into consideration the standard requirement for the construction of the bridge with the full knowledge of the Nigerian Railway Corporation which allows its trains to pass.
The commissioner explained that in order to accommodate the electric power for the train in the future, there is need for additional one metre clearance taking the minimal required to 6.2 metres.
A solution was finally agreed which is applicable at all overhead bridges therefore to cater for the rail line lowered by one metre dipping gradually over 500 metres on both sides with a slope of 0.2 percent.
He said the solution was agreed upon by parties made up of the Honourable Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, the Consultant to the project, the Contractor, representative of the Nigerian Railway Corporation, engineers from both the federal and state ministries.

Amosun, Amaechi Meet on Resolution of Lagos-Ibadan Rail/Sango Flyover Impediment

Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun and the Minister of Transportation, Rt. Hon. Rotimi Amaechi, met to discus the best engineering design on the right of way and rail alignment at Ijoko axis of the Lagos-Kano rail project.

Amaechi, speaking after an inspection of the flyover at Ijoko, Sango Ota area of the state with the governor, told press men that this was necessary to address the challenge causing the delay of the project, so as to meet set target for its completion.

The minister identified the right of way and height of the flyover being constructed by the Ogun state government as some of the reasons for the delay, adding that his ministry would await suggestions from engineers as regards the engineering options to address the challenge.

On the cash refund request of the state government, Amechi disclosed that the Federal Executive Council has started deliberations on the refund of the money spent to construct federal roads in the state.

He assured that the residents, whose houses were demolished to pave way for the project, will be compensated.

Also speaking, Amosun expressed delight over the determination of the Federal Government to execute the project, noting that reviving the rail system is in the interest of the nation.

According to him, the economy of the country, depends to a considerable extent, on the Ogun state axis, which he described as a passage for other states.

Pleading for the speedy completion of the project, he said it will reduce the impact of vehicular movement on the roads and also serve as a means of transporting goods.

The governor stated that about 90 percent of the roads constructed in the state by his government are federal roads and urged the Federal Government to refund the money spent, so that it can be utilised to further develop the state.
