EFCC did not visit my residence - Amosun

The Governor of Ogun State, Senator Ibikunle Amosun, has followed with deep reflection and consternation, the false and embarrassing reports on the social media, that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) visited his residence in Lagos and recovered huge sums of money.

The Governor, in a statement by the Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Dayo Adeneye, said the malicious allegations would have been ignored, but for the general interest of the public and the good people of Ogun State.

He said the allegation was nothing, but another in a series of political attacks to tarnish the image of Governor Amosun.

He stressed there had been series of false accusations against the person of Governor Amosun, all in an attempt to pull him down politically.

“Those behind the malicious attacks are doing so to heat up the polity ahead of the 2019 general elections. They are doing it on behalf of their paymasters for cheap political motives. It has become a routine of one week one accusation.

“Neither the EFCC nor any security agency has visited the Governor's residence”, he said.

Adeneye recalled that there had been consistent falsehood against the Governor since 2011.

These false reports should be disregarded and ignored in their entirety as they are only meant to score cheap political points.

However, the Governor would like it to be known, that he will not hesitate to take requisite legal action against any medium that allows itself to be used as the purveyor of any such manifestly false and misleading information.

Ogun Govt. Pays N5.1bn To Pensioners In 8 Months

The Permanent Secretary, Ogun Bureau of Pensions, Mr Babatunde Agbaje, said on Thursday that the state government had paid N5.1billion to its pensioners between January and August.

Agbaje made this known during an oversight visit of the State Assembly Committee on Establishment and Public Service Matters to the Office of the State Head of Service in Abeokuta.

He explained that the state government had also approved the payment of N3.1 billion as gratuities to some pensioners in the first quarter of 2017.

The permanent secretary stated that the Bureau of State Pensions conducted: “I am alive exercise” for the state pensioners in May.

“The physical verification exercise was targeted to screen 12,571 pensioners but only 11,153 participated recording 88.72 per cent success,” he said.

Agbaje said that during the exercise, the pensioners’ bio-data were upgraded with passport and biometric capturing.

He said that N27.9 million was being saved by the state government on monthly basis due to the remaining 1,418 pensioners not screened, who were absent during the exercise.

Agbaje noted that the integration of technology into the management of Pension Fund Administration in the state would checkmate the usual bureaucracy in processing retirement benefits of intending retirees.

He explained that the bureau was faced with inadequate modern computer systems, which were needed for enhancement of staff productivity.

He stated that non-availability of utility vehicles for the bureau had been hindering its operations.

Responding, House Committee Chairman, Mr Razak Oduntan, urged the bureau to always ensure prompt payment of pensions to the pensioners.

Oduntan said that the committee would continue to make laws that would be of benefits to the pensioners and the people of the state.

The Commissioner for Education Science and Technology, Mrs. Modupe Mujota who made this known while playing host to the Executive members of the Association at her office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, said the change in status of the polytechnic to a University of Science and Technology would not have any effect on the activities of the Alumni Association.

Mrs. Amosun Advocates Cancer-Free Society

Wife of Ogun State Governor and Founder of UPLIFT Development Foundation (UDF), Dr. (Mrs.) Olufunso Amosun has advocated regular breast self-examination for women so as to detect any growth or abnormality early towards reducing maternal mortality on account of breast cancer.

Mrs Amosun said this during the flag-off of the 2017 Free Breast and Cervical Cancers Awareness and Screening Campaign organised for female professionals and Civil/Public Servants in the State in collaboration with the Medical Women Association of Nigeria (MWAN), Ogun State branch held at the State Hospital Ota, Ogun West Senatorial District.

She noted that “due to the prevalence of breast cancer among women, the UPLIFT Development Foundation took the initiative to launch a massive cancer sensitisation campaign to raise awareness about the disease following a World Health Organisation’s (WHO) survey which revealed that by 2020 there would be 10 million new cases every year in developing countries, out of which six million will die.”

The Wife of the Governor explained that breast and cervical cancers were very serious health challenges that affect women irrespective of age, status and environment since it had now been discovered in youths, urging women and ladies from age sixteen and above to self-examine their breasts every month especially after their menstrual periods.

Mrs Amosun charged participants to avail themselves of the free screening to know their health status and reduce the prevalence of breast and cervical cancers, enjoining women across the three Senatorial Districts to visit any UPLIFT cancer screening centre closer to them throughout the month of October and beyond for free screening and treatment.

In his goodwill message, the State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Babatunde Ipaye said cancer, being a dreaded disease and common to women must be kicked out of the state to curb maternal mortality, commending the UPLIFT Development Foundation for its social intervention which according to him should be emulated by individuals and corporate organisations.

Dr. Ipaye said breast cancer affects more women than men with about 12 million women losing their lives annually in Nigeria, urging beneficiaries of the free cancer screening to reciprocate the kind gesture of the Wife of the Governor by creating awareness on the disease in their communities, particularly at the grassroots.

The President, Medical Women Association, Ogun State branch, Dr. Stella Ogunmuyiwa explained that cancer was curable if detected early, advising the women to do regular breast self-examination and if they noticed any lump or change in their breast should visit the hospital without delay for treatment.

One of the beneficiaries, Mrs Olubunmi Adeola praised the wife of the Governor for the health initiative aimed at strengthening the health sector, particularly for availing Ogun State women of the opportunity, saying women would be better for it.

MAUSTECH: Amosun Allays Fears of MAPOLY Students

Ogun State Governor, Senator Ibikunle Amosun has assured the current students of the Moshood Abiola Polytechnic (MAPOLY), Abeokuta, that the creation of the Moshood Abiola University of Science and Technology (MAUSTECH), as well as the Ogun State Polytechnic, Ipokia, will not in any way disrupt the existing academic calendar of their institution.

Amosun gave the assurance, while addressing students of MAPOLY, who staged a peaceful protest to his office, to express their grievances over the refusal of their lecturers to conduct their examination, three weeks after it was scheduled to hold.

Describing the action of the lecturers as a ploy to hold the government to ransom, he assured that the representatives of the institution will be invited immediately to give reasons for their decision.

The governor, who said the lecturers want the current academic staff of MAPOLY to be automatically transferred to the new university, stated that this cannot be the case, as only those, who are qualified to lecture in a university, will be absorbed.

He stated that the students will not be moved to Ipokia immediately, as MAPOLY will not go into extinction until after four years, cautioning the students against being used for political ends.

While further allaying the fears of the students, the governor said that new lecturers ill be employed in Ipokia, to lecture the National Diploma 1 students, but added that no new National Diploma student will be admitted into MAPOLY this year.

The students, led by the Chairman of the National Association of Nigeria Students (NANS), Comrade Sikirullahi Balogun Olawale, had earlier commended the state government for its leadership style, in handling their grievances.
