Core functions of the Department include:

  1. Advising the Accounting Officer and other Departmental Heads on all financial matters as well as technical provisions of Financial Instructions and other Treasury and Financial Circulars.
  2. Ensuring that funds meant for the activities of the Ministry are collected, disbursed and properly accounted for.
  3. Ensuring compliance with Financial Instructions and Accounting Codes
  4. Managing all funds and public money due and receivable in the Ministry
  5. Serving as a member of Departmental and Ministerial Tenders Board.
  6. Preparation of monthly Salaries and Allowances
  7. Budget Preparation and Implementation
  8. Attending to and working with other supervisory/regulatory agencies of the Government such as the office of the Accountant -General, Finance and Appropriation Committee/and Public Accounts Committee of the State House of Assembly.
  9. Advising on the control and management of funds of the Ministry
  10. Assisting the Accounting Officer in ensuring that internal guides, rules, regulations and procedures are adequately provided for and that security and effective checks on the assessment, collection and account for revenue are put in place
  11. Ensuring timely preparation of Final Accounts/Financial Statements
  12. Maintaining proper records of Accounts such as Main and Subsidiary Ledgers, Cash Book, DVEA Book, Personal Advances Ledger, etc
  13. Ensure proper monitoring and accounting for revenue instruments e.g Revenue Invoice, Revenue Receipts, and all other Revenue Books.
  14. Carrying out any other Financial, Accounting and Budgetary activities that may be assigned by the Honourable Commissioner/Accounting Officer from time to time.
